Barn Hunt: what is it? All about training and training dogs on!
Barn Hunt (literal translation "hunting in the barn") is a new kind of sports. However, it is becoming increasingly popular. What is a barn hunt and how is it done?
Invented this type of cynological sport in the USA. Barn Hunt is a conditional hunt for a rat. Rodents sit in cages in the barn, and the dog must detect it, breaking the maze of hay bales. The labyrinth includes burrows, slides, bridges and tunnels. The winner is the one who faster than rivals will find all the hidden rats.
An important condition of this sport is concern for the welfare of rats. Rodents are specially trained, accustomed to dogs and often give the opportunity to relax, so that the animals do not suffer from distress. A drinker is a must. In addition, the cage prevents the dog from causing physical damage to the rat.
In addition, attempts to grab a rat deprive the dog of points. Its task is only to find the “victim”.
Different dogs older than 6 months can participate in the Barn Hunt, regardless of breed. However, absolutely blind or deaf dogs are not allowed to compete. There is also a size restriction: the diameter of the tunnel is approximately 45 cm, therefore, the dog should not be stuck in it.
The necessary qualities that are required of a dog are quick wit, obedience and at the same time the ability to make independent decisions. Not the last role is played by the sense of smell and hunting instinct.
